Kat - kat@postpals.co.uk

Kat’s work is currently “on hold” as she has been very ill since June 2005.

Name:
Kat

Age: 25

Location: Cornwall, South West

Post Pals Job: Manager and Administrator (Currently out of action)

Employment: Normally house bound due to health, but has been in hospital since June.

About me: I guess I over see Post Pals, organising the team, volunteers, handling the administration; making sure that safety is number one priority for the project.

I’ve been ill since I was young with a selection of health problems, and even spent time in CLIC house where many of our Pals have been. I’m often found in plaster casts or in hospital – it’s a running joke!

I volunteer for AYME as their regional contact in Cornwall and I’m a “buddy” to severely affected members – both of which add to my Millennium Volunteer hours. I’m part of the Member Advisory Group for Patchworx, answer crisis emails from those in need and assist on a group for people with DID/MPD.

I’m not sure what I want to do long term, maybe develop Post Pals, or enter the caring or education professions. Although it’s cheesy, I learnt long ago you don’t have to be a doctor to save a life…

Vix - vix@postpals.co.uk

Name: Vix

Age: 25

Location: Brighton, South East

Post Pals Job: Treasurer

Employment: Full time carer to a child with cerebral palsy

About me: I became ill with M.E. during my A’ levels in 2000 and am now in recovery. I've just completed a certificate course in counselling which I hope to develop upon and use in any future career.

I also station a help line for M.E. suffers in need of support and while I was ill I used to co-ordinated a scheme run by AYME where teddy bears were hand made and sent to severely affected members. This lead to me completing my 200 hours on the Millennium Volunteer program.

Within Post Pals, I organise the spending within the project, handling the accounts and fundraising plans.

Viks - viks@postpals.co.uk

Name: Viks

Age: 23

Location: Surrey, South East

Employment: Bed bound with M.E.

About me: I’ve been ill on and off since I was young, and have been bedbound for 4 years. Along side general Post Pal work I am responsible for Posty, both monitoring the quantity and overseeing Posty Projects activities (themed parcels we send every month, Elf project etc)and the day to day runnings of Post Pals. My house looks like a cross between a mail room and a toy store!

When I first became bedbound in 2001 I was sent so many cards it wasn’t long before my walls and ceiling were covered, it became my reason to wake up each day. Now I want others to be able to experience this.

I first got into voluntary work at the age of 5 when I helped my grandparents working for Rainbow Trust from the charity's early days. In 2002 I completed my 200 hours on the Millennium Volunteer scheme with AYME, I also volunteer online for Brainfog and Patchworx, and spend time raising awareness of severe ME.

Volunteers (Snaily trailers) - info@postpals.co.uk

Name: Snaily trailers

Age: 15 – 34

Location: Sliming all over the UK

Post Pals Job: General

Employment: Eating leaves

About us: We all know it's you, members of the public who help make a difference to sick children by logging online and sending post to the Pals, but behind that is a network of dedicated volunteers (Snaily trailers) who handle all kinds of jobs.

The Team knew their health was likely to cause problems with trying to run the project and so they set about finding some special people (us) who could give an hour or two a week to assist the team with the little and not so little jobs. Sometimes it's research or making hand made cards, teaching one of us to use a program or compiling charity lists.

The team feel we are just as important to Post Pals as them, the Pals and lovely people like you. There are too many of us to mention by name, but at the last team meeting there was a delivery of snails arrived for the birthday boxes.

The little blighters had a mind of their own and before we knew it they were out of control. In a flash Kat found a camera and we think it’s the perfect picture to represent those who do so much and ask for so little in return, the 'Snaily trailers'!
