David M's Story
Story written 2006
David was a healthy and happy 1 year old boy who was walking and talking just as a 1 year old boy should. David enjoyed life and we enjoyed David.
David’s behaviour started to change; all of a sudden my little angel turned into a little tinker! His dad noticed his eyes wobbling several times a day but I (Mam) never seemed to see it so I didn’t think there was anything to worry about. Then David started finding it hard to stay balanced; he was always falling over and hurting himself. Late November 2004 I noticed his eyes and by this time David was being sick a lot, so I took him to the hospital to be checked as I thought he might need glasses or grommets.
Once at the hospital he was checked and admitted and rushed in for a CAT scan. The doctors seemed to think David had a brain tumour. Following the CAT scan, David had a MRI scan on his head and an EEG. They didn’t find anything thank God. But then they came back to me with a thing called a neuroblastoma and that they would like to check David for one. David had to have more tests; he had a MRIB and another MRI, this time full body, and with these they found the tumour.
David’s tumour is small enough to remove and he’s booked in for his operation on the 4th of February. His operation is also for bone marrow. If all goes well David should only need treatment for a year, so please keep your fingers crossed all goes well.
Update 30th January 2008
David has been in hospital since before Christmas. He went in with the flu, he had high temperatures and stopped eating and ended up with chicken pox and shingles. He's much better now and we’re hoping to get home in the next couple of days (fingers crossed).
Thank you to Post Pals, what you are doing is amazing and it really does make the kids happier. David loves the post man coming and normally knows which letters are for him before we do. Thanks again, from Emma, David and Ella.
Update 8th September 2007
David’s been in hospital for over a month now. He's having internal radiation which is making him poorly. He feels really down and he just can’t be bothered at the moment. His course ended yesterday (friday) so hopefully if he can pick himself up, we might be home by next week where he's always happiest.
Thank you to everyone who sends David cards and post. His cards brighten up his room for him.
Update 29th June 2007
First of all I’d like to thank everyone for David’s post this last month. He's been a bit down as he was in hospital for ages and was confined to the same room, so every bit of post was appreciated.
David’s transplant went well and his body took to the bone marrow really quickly. Staying confined in the same room and not being allowed in the toy room didn’t go down very well though (!) but he got on with it and he's been home for a couple of days now. He isn’t eating so i have to do over night feeds, but apart from that he's looking great.
Update 3rd May 2007
Things were looking up for us early this month with the doctors thinking David was getting much better, but his test results showed different. He is having a bone marrow transplant today (May 3rd) and will probably be in the hospital for a while again.
Update 12th February 2007
David’s been really well this last month. We got his test results back and they have improved a lot since the last ones and we’re over the moon about it.
Update 2nd November 2006
David hasn’t been too bad this month; we only spent just under a week in the hospital which is great. He’s still having chemo which is making him sick but he's not letting it hold him back.
David loved the arty box Viks, he's carrying it everywhere so thanks!
Update 1st October 2006
David’s ok at the minute. He’s still in the hospital most the time but is in and out of the toy room like a yoyo so I’m taking that as a good sign!
Thank you to everyone for all the lovely things David has been sent this month, they have kept him entertained in the hospital and he is really enjoying all the postcards - I tell him a little story about all the different places on the card’s and he loves it.
Update 31st August 2006
David’s doing really well, the hospital managed to remove the whole tumour and it hasn’t left him any worse. However, he still has neuroblastoma in his bone marrow and he'll still need more treatment, but he's still recovering from the operation so is having a rest from it all at the minute.
All the mail he is getting is really nice, he loves it. His dad doesn’t sleep at the hospital with us so brings his mail with him in the day.
Update 31st July 2006
We’ve just had David’s results back from his scans and they have found another tumor which they are going to try and remove on Friday. David’s little sister has also got chicken pox which is a real worry with him being so poorly and on steroids. We’re basically having a really really bad time of it at the moment.
Update 29th June 2006
David’s finding it hard at the minute; the treatment is making him really sick and tired. He's in and out of the hospital like a yoyo lately, but if it gets rid of this horrible cancer then i suppose it’s worth it.
Update 28th April 2006
Thanks to everyone who sent me a nice card or present this month. Can I thank the lovely lady who sent me all the dough and bubbles I had so much fun with these and the lady who sent me the bouncing egg that made me laugh and Julie who always sends me nice things and anyone else I forgot.
David’s doing well at the minute. He’s having more chemo which is making him a bit sick and tired but he’s a lot chirpier than he has been over the last few months.
Update 7th April 2006
David’s still in hospital but is getting a bit better. The hospital said we will probably be in for a while yet but we’ll most likely be out for his birthday next month, so we’re going to plan something nice for that.
The people who thought of Post Pals must have hearts of gold. It’s lovely to see David’s face when he gets a new card or a little present. Thanks to everyone who sent David a card/postcard or present, he was over the moon with everything and they kept him busy for ages in the hospital.
Update 3rd March 2006
A little update on David; he started his chemo again on tuesday as an out-patient but he hasn't taken to it too well this time so we’re now in-patients again.
Update 19th February 2006
David is not too well at the moment, he had the tumour removed 2 weeks ago and now he has tonsillitis and chronic sickness. On top of all this we've just been told David has Dancing Eyes and Feet Syndrome a really rare childhood illness; the poor little thing doesn’t know what’s going on. He should be back to his old self soon (i hope) David received a get well card from Post Pals and he loved it, so thanks for that as well.
